Pump Engineering Wins Magtaa SWRO Project
Pump Engineering LLC is pleased to announce that Hyflux Ltd. has selected
PEI's HTCAT TurboCharger as the energy recovery technology for the 500,000
m3/day sea water reverse osmosis (SWRO) plant on the northwest coast of Algeria
in Magtaa. PEI will supply 25 HTCAT-7200 TurboChargers for this SWRO plant.
Hyflux Ltd. of Singapore won the contract to design, build, operate, and
transfer the Magtaa SWRO plant for a concession of 25 years.
Delivery of the TurboChargers will occur in 2010 and the plant will start
operation in 2011. When in operation, the 500,000 m3/day of potable water
quality production will be the largest SWRO plant in the world.
Kevin Terrasi, PEI’s VP Engineering, commenting on the selection of the
TurboCharger for Magtaa said, “This is a monumental project for the RO industry
and a strong statement for PEI’s AT (Advanced Technology) TurboChargers
utilizing the Volute Insert technology. The evaluation process included a very
in-depth study into energy efficiency, ease of operation, simplicity, and
reliability, as well as long-term benefits. We think it is great that PEI’s
technology has been chosen for this landmark project and we believe when the
industry does this type of in-depth analysis the success at Magtaa is a sign of
what’s to come.”
Recent market share data of energy recovery device technology published by
Global Water Intelligence in September 2009 shows TurbCharger technology market
share growth out pacing isobaric technology by a significant margin. PEI’s 666%
growth from 2005–2009 (YTD) is leading all ERD suppliers.
Larry Pelegrin, VP Sales & Marketing for PEI, offered congratulations to both
the Hyflux and PEI teams for the hard work and analysis that lead to the
selection of the PEI TurboCharger. “The detailed engineering analysis and life
cycle cost calculations of the energy recovery alternatives left no stone
unturned. Magtaa will be a bench mark for future ERD device selections,” said
Pelegrin.
